Finally, I called the doctor yesterday. It was getting ridiculous. It was Wednesday and I was still sick from the race. I was nauseous and my head hurt still since Sunday. This is silly. After talking to Barb on Tues I quickly realized that I had really bad heat exhaustion. I must have gotten sick during the race (I knew that but stuck it out). The smart and experienced athlete would have gotten an IV at the finish and all would have been good on Monday. Well I was so bummed about bonking that I just wanted to get home and see my kids. Monday I felt terrible, sick and just gross. By Tuesday I was starting the think I was pregnant, NOT GOOD. But that is how I felt. On Wednesday, I said this is enough. I was still bonking during my workouts and feeling terrible. I put a call in and an hour later talked to my doctor. I told him my symptoms and the first thing he said, "You know Jenny you can still get pregnancy while nursing." Yes I know Dr. but TRUST me that is NOT happening in this house for a LONG time. Then he went on to tell me about electrolyte depletion, potassium, and sodium can play havoc on your body if you only take in water. I definitely had severe heat exhaustion probably almost heat stroke if it had been a longer run. If I was more sane I would have stopped running when I started going blurry but kept going. Because as triathletes we are such smart people. He told me until I start drinking electrolytes and eating tons of salt I will continue to feel sick and then will need to go to the hospital (again something most normal people would have done after the race) to get IVs. So last night I downed a ton of gatorade and will continue today. I hope by tomorrow I am back to normal. And trust me this will never happen again.Thursday, August 28, 2008
OHHH that's it...

Take some of that Nuun and drink it all day long. Other things I use at Emergen-C.... which is jammed with vitamin C (similar to NUUN). I drink 3 of those Nalgene 32 ounce bottles of water a day. I make them 3 different flavors and keep them in the fridge!
Well done again Jenny! It will come together! I used to have a coach who told me..... You have to show up and suck first! Although I would not call your performances anything CLOSE to sucking!
:-) Mary!
Once, after a hard race, I thought I was pregnant. My wife quick informed me of how that made no sense.
Hope you feel better soon!!!!
Oh I had no idea you were still feeling yucky! A lot of moms at our elementary school say a virus is going around too..
Just ran across your blog today. Love reading how you made your return to racing. I just had my second baby a month ago and am slowly, slowly making my way back into shape.
Good luck and feel better soon.
Jenny! Welcome back to triathlon huh?! Oh well, better go through this early in your rookie pro year than later! Hope you are feeling better today. Some coconut water works REALLY well for this, back in Vietnam days when they would come to Hawaii, they would pull coconuts down and drink them, it was their all natural IV! I am so serious, I even googled it when I heard that. DRINK IT :)
All the best to you!
Keep rocking! I love the fact that you are racing pro with 2 little kids, having just given birth a few months ago??? - keep inspiring us Moms who tri on the side!! I loved the earlier post of your favorite (maybe not) workout session in basement - computrainer/treadmill you are building mental endurance by training inside!
Hi jenny,
Found your blog off of Maija's site. I second bree on the coconut water, great electrolyte replacement. You can mix it with OJ too for lots of good stuff! Hope you feel better!
